Iron Giant Free Association - Terry Riley's In C (Pre-Order)

The recording and release of their digital debut is the end result of IRON GIANT FREE ASSOCIATION's decade-long relationship with Terry Riley's 1964 masterwork, In C. When their group first began, they played strictly through-composed percussion quartet music. As they grew, they became interested in collaboration and In C was a great place to start. Receiving positive feedback from audiences, this piece quickly became a staple of their repertoire, and a vehicle for collaboration and exploration. Over time, the group's interpretation of the piece took on a distinct character, something they felt confident was unique to them.

When they decided it was time to record an album, In C was an obvious choice. They'd decided early on that they wanted to record it themselves. Knowing this would be a maximalist project, they felt like this would allow us adequate time for trial and error. With their interpretation, they hope to honor the tradition of this classic piece of music, while remaining unafraid to change the rules when their instincts lead them in new directions. They split the piece into quarters and attempted to give each segment a unique character & voice.

The entire album was recorded in their houses, on free weekends, between the summers of ‘22-’23. They had some experience with home recording, but this project dwarfed anything They had taken on before. The four of them layered the instruments one at a time, quilting together a single 40-minute Logic Pro project consisting of 125 separate tracks. They researched micing techniques for dozens of obscure instruments, throwing everything at the wall to see what would stick. After 12+ years as a band, recording this album helped them solidify their vision, and has given them inspiration to continue performing this music, allowing it to evolve, for years to come.
